I was invited by a pastor in an Abuja-based church to perform at an event put together by the church. Being someone I had developed a good relationship with over time, we did not discuss fees. I boarded a flight Scheduleto Abuja and performed at the event. After my performance, the pastor approached me and commended my performance. He prayed for me and proceeded to give me a very small percentage of what I would normally charge for such an event. He called it ‘honorarium’ and gleefully told me he was ‘blessing’ me. Apparently, he thought he was doing me a favour. I then told him the amount I usually charge for such an event and he stepped back in amazement, exclaiming. “Ehn, for what”?, he asked, almost screaming. I was sort of stranded that day and needed money. The money he offered did not even cover my transport and when I told him that, he calculated road transport fare for me. Obviously, he was totally oblivious of how we work and bill in the entertainment industry. Well, that was how I ended up performing almost free of charge.
