Brad and Angie to live in Jozi this year

Hollywood’s royal couple Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie will move to South Africa this year while he works on a new film, local media reported yesterday.
The pair, who have six children together, have rented a house in the upmarket Johannesburg suburb of Sandhurst for $7 600 (R85 485) a month, sister newspaper Beeld reported, citing a source involved in the private rental deal.
The couple will live in South Africa while Pitt works on a new film with actor George Clooney, the newspaper said. It is unclear when the pair will arrive or if their children will be joining them.
It will not be the couple’s first stay in the region. They travelled to Swakopmund in neighbouring Namibia in 2006, where Jolie gave birth to their first biological child, daughter Shiloh Jolie-Pitt.
Local film industry sources were unable yesterday to confirm Pitt’s upcoming project.

Justin Bieber: Alleged assault on Toronto limo driver triggered by radio volume argument, report say

Justin Bieber’s alleged assault of a Toronto limo driver on Dec. 30 was reportedly triggered by the not-loud-enough volume of the vehicle’s radio, according to TMZ.

Justin Bieber’s alleged assault of a Toronto limo driver on Dec. 30 was reportedly triggered by the not-loud-enough volume of the vehicle’s radio, according to TMZ.
The American news outlet reports that Bieber’s people wanted the volume turned up higher as he cruised the Toronto entertainment district with an entourage.
The driver obliged, but just to a point.
When he wouldn’t turn it any louder, things got ugly, according to TMZ.
Meanwhile, in other Bieber news, a female Miami police officer finds herself under investigation after reportedly trying to take a photo of Bieber while he was under arrest in Florida last week for drag racing.
Making the drag racing incident more bizarre, there’s no evidence that he was actually racing, according to records TMZ claims to have obtained.
Miami police have already subpoenaed a video from TMZ which they suspect might show the former Stratford, Ont., resident racing.
The rented Lamborghini is capable of cheek-popping speeds, but it reached a maximum of only 71 km/h, according to the U.S. news outlet.
But Miami Police say he was clocked at speeds between 88-97 km/h.
He has pleaded not guilty to DUI, resisting arrest, and driving without a licence in relation to the incident.
If Bieber’s rattled, then he’s apparently cooling his nerves in the entertainment district of Toronto, as some media reports have him at Switch Nightclub, near King St. E. and Church St., until the wee hours of Friday.
Meanwhile, an American petition to have him deported continues to swell. It’s now at 138,000 signatures.
The White House must give a reply to any petition with more than 100,000 names.

Prophet T.B Joshua delivers gay Nigerian, makes him ‘straight’

TB Joshua
Prophet TB Joshua recently delivered a gay Nigerian, Thaddeus and made him ‘straight’.
Sharing his testimonies during a live programme on Emmanuel TV, Thaddeus, a Nigerian from Imo State revealed that “the ‘gay’ demon has been chased out of him after an encounter with Prophet TB Joshua’s Wise men.

“I was travelling to Asia and had a long stopover in an African country where he stayed in a hotel with a swimming pool. I went for a swim with fellow men, then went to eat and sleep.
That night, in a dream, I saw myself swimming in the same swimming pool naked with other men. When i woke up, I was sweating and the ‘gay’ demon entered me’ he revealed.

I realised that I no longer had passion for women, but rather began to develop passion for men like me, yet I was a christian”  he further revealed.
As a translator in his church, Thaddeus continued assisting in the church while still living that lifestyle and “indulging in these sinful desires”.
One day, his pastor asked him to go to The Synagogue Church of All Nations,  SCOAN for deliverance.
“On arriving at The SCOAN, I was in one of the many overflow canopies and could not get a pass to enter the church.
From nowhere, an old woman who I have never met before handed me a pass, saying, “Here, take mine and go inside.”
As soon as I entered, Wise Man Christopher approached me, and I lost control of myself until I was finally delivered in the name of Jesus Christ. ” Thaddeus narrated

“Now I am delivered, I no longer have affection for men but for ladies. If you come across someone with the same problem, you should not condemn. The only answer is deliverance.” He concluded

My Greater Disappointment with today’s Nollywood— Clarion Chukwurah

ClarionTwo years ago, ageless beauty and veteran actress, Clarion Chukwurah took a break from acting to tour three countries following her position as a special UN peace envoy. She’s back in the country and upon her return, she bagged a prestigious award in recognition of her contribution towards the development of the Nigerian film industry. But in spite of all these, Chukwurah still feels disappointed with a lot of things happening in the industry. She bares her mind on the issues.
You recently won ‘Legends of Nollywood’award. How do you feel being recognised as a legend in the industry?
I was on location in Enugu when the award was held and as you can see, ‘Best Female Act, Mirror in the Sun, Clarion Chukwurah’. The award was received on my behalf by my publicist, Cornell Udofia. This award is yearly organised by Paul Obazele’s company, Royal Pictures. Frank Rajah, I think was part of it as well as Zack Orji and many others. I appreciate the award having been given this recognition for the role I played in the now rested ‘Mirror in the Sun.’ But I think that the name of the award and the work for which it was given is rather misplaced.
That is because the award is called, ‘Legends of Nollywood’. Nollywood is today’s euphemism for the Nigerian film industry. ‘Mirror in the Sun’ was the second national network soap opera. It was a television drama. I understand that before the award was held, AMP president,Mr. Zik Zulu Okafor and other stakeholders celebrated Nollywood at 20, which witnessed an award ceremony called Legends of Nollywood Awards.
They honoured those whom they considered as foremost actors and cinematographers in the industry.
However, when Paul Obazele set out to hold his own Legends of Nollywood award, he gave people the impression that he was going to correct the anomalies. I was expecting Zik Zulu’s ‘Legends of Nollywood’awards to honour actors, producers, directors, cinematographers who have made their marks dating back to late 1950s, till the advent of the new Nollywood. That was my expectations.
They actually wanted to give me an award for ‘Koko Close’, a TV drama I did in Ibadan while I was an undergraduate in the University of Ife. I was surprised, you are talking about ‘Legends of Nollywood’ and you are giving me an award for a role I played in a TV drama. Are you not confused here? I expected to see the likes of Chief Hubert Ogunde being given a posthumous award, MKO Abiola who was the first Nigerian business mogul to sponsor a multi million Naira technicolour Nigerian film titled ‘Bisi Daughter of the River’.
I was expecting to see Kunle Afolayan received a posthumous award on behalf of his father, Sunday Omobolanle’s (Aluwe) first wife stepping out to an award on behalf of her father, Moses Olaiya, Jeta Amata mounting the stage to pick an award on behalf of his grand father.
That was what I expected to see at the ‘Legend of Nollywood’ awards. But whilst Zik Zulu and his partners deliberately refused to recognise that there was a film industry before the production of teh movie, ‘Living in Bondage’, Obazele’s faction proved themselves more ignorant by lumping TV and everything together.
They are two different things. I think it’s high time, the Nollywood practitioners should stop feigning ignorance and face the truth that before Jesus Christ, there was Abraham. Before Nollywood, there was a Nigerian film industry and that is the main reason Nollywood is stagnant today. That is why Nollywood is not growing. If a child doesn’t recognise his mother, how can he grow? If you don’t know where you are coming from, how would you know here you are going to?
No doubt, you are a legend in the Nigerian motion picture industry. What’s the difference between Nollywood of yesteryears and today’s Nollywood?
It hasn’t improved at all. It is now a proverbial ‘ state’ that makes one to weep. Everything has fallen to a disgraceful state. No standards are left. I was on a location in Enugu last month and the production manager was insulting the director of photography. I was shocked.
The producer and the director were shouting at each other. I could not imagine it. The artistic director would just walk away and actors are not directed on what to do. Any greenhorn could hit the set and believe that she could sleep her way to the top. She is pretty and sleeps with the Executive Producer. It’s just sickening. And they say to you, this movie is meant for the market and the cinema. It is not for film festival, just do it anyhow because this is for inside the market. That goes to show there are no standards. It is pathetic.
We didn’t see much of you last year in the movies?
I was out of the country for two years. I came back in May last year and I shot my very first movie in the same month. I shot about six movies from May through December 15th when I returned to my home. Those movies were, Last Family Reunion, That Fateful Night, Hustlers, The God of the Ghetto and Apaye, Land of Canaan.
Why did you travel abroad for two years?
I was appointed a United Nations international special peace envoy on international peace day at the ECOWAS building in Abuja. I had two years to travel to three countries in the course of my NGO because I was given that appointment in recognition of my NGO, Clarion Chukwurah Initiative International.
We have been dealing with women and children. More over, I worked in Kenya, Tanzania and Los Angeles. In those two years, I was travelling from Kenya to Tanzania and LA.
It was wonderful.
For me, I have achieved something that gives me a deep sense of satisfaction, a feeling that I have an edge above all this issue of fame. I have risen above all that. In Kenya, my initiative was supporting this community school in a slum called Soweto Kayole in Nairobi. When I started working in that community, I encountered school children who are fatherless and whose mothers are HIV/AIDS patients. I had about 50 of them, but before the end of October 2012, the number increased to 350 children. They increased when they heard I had a daily feeding programme for the children.
They also had no clothes. I put uniform on the back of every kid and sandals on their feet. We had environmental sanitation, health aids and collaborating with the UN Habitat and the Rotary. I am a member of the rotary club of Nairobi. The bulk of the members are non Africans- Italians, Americans, British and others.
They were bringing support to help teach these children and of course, the Redeemed Christian Church of God, East Africa, a section of which I am a member. Even when Daddy Adeboye came for the East Africa convention, he saw my work and commended it. Mummy G.O. also prayed for me.
For their mothers, we taught them about basic personal and environmental hygiene. We built toilets, cleared gutters and taught them how to protect themselves against sex related diseases. We also put them on drugs for HIV AIDS. Because the UN headquarters is there, there are a lot of bodies to collaborate with for an NGO like mine which is recognised. We started skill acquisition.
In Los Angeles, I got support from the Church of Science in Hollywood to produce some episodes on women empowerment and women related issues in terms of what is happening in the Caribbean were men are killing their wives and girlfriends. It happens in Kenya. The idea is to bring these issues to the fore what African heritage men are doing to their women so that we can look at these issues and find a way to re-orient the women on how to handle them.
We also reached out to the men to learn to handle things differently and this we sent to the TV. The initiative representative in Canada, Nicola Rodney came to the state for this programme so that she could take it back for informative training to impact on the lives of women in the Caribbean especially in Guyana.
This is an era where actors and actresses are producing their own movies; do you have plans to go into movie production?
I do have plans for that but I don’t want to look at it as producing my movies. I intend also to do a lot of collaborations. I talked about how things are.
I intend to work in and outside the mainstream Nollywood world and to collectively move Nollywood forward.
What is the way forward?
The mainstream Nollywood world is the one that caters for the populace, not necessarily the cinema movies. And with the new distribution channel that is coming, the important thing is for the professionals to come into it and not say we can’t relate with this people. In order to make things right, you have to go back in there with a determination to make things right.
You are still looking beautiful after putting in several years in the movie industry. What’s the secret of your ageless looks?
The secret is discipline. You have to be as my son Brian would say wellness freak. You have to know when to exercise. You have to know the importance of water, eating the right things. It is about healthy living, healthy eating.
Aside movie making and your NGO, what else do you do?
I have a clothing line. I still have the C3. We have a partner outlet in Toronto, Kenya and the UK. We are doing well by God’s grace.
Are you not thinking of marriage?
Give me a break. Please don’t ask. Don’t go there. Please spare me.

Modeling for Lady Gaga was amazing —Nigeria-born UK Model

Oni Oladimeji was the first runner up at the 2013 edition of the UKTop Model. The model, in this interview with Doyin Adeoye, spoke about his fashion preferences, career and style, among other things.
Foray into modeling…
I had always had the passion for modeling and that basically started a long time ago, but because of some restraining factors here in Nigeria, I had to subdue the passion. But I remember ever since I was at the university, around 2010, my friends used to tell me of how good my body looked and how I could make a career in modeling, but I never gave it much thought. It was not until I got in contact with Mon Ami, the prominent Nigerian fashion designer, that I began to see it as a major career. He groomed and encouraged me into the modeling field. He taught me about perseverance, which is important in this line of profession. I was serving then in Abeokuta, Ogun State, so I used to shuttle between there and Lagos, following him to shows and it was a really good experience.

Modeling in the UK…
I travelled to the UK for my Masters after I finished my National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) programme and I remember initially when I got there, I still had the same mentality I had from Nigeria, that it wouldn’t be easy to get an equal chance with the models there. But I got triggered one day as I was shopping online for some wears; I saw these perfect blazers on a mannequin and I looked at its structure and it struck me that I could do such as well. So I went online and surfed for modeling agencies and after I got one, I did some photo shoots and later  I had the opportunity to work with a marketing company, the N2O Experiential Marketing Company, UK, which created a platform for me to model at some shows, as a promo model and a brand ambassador.

Modeling for Lady Gaga…
While at the company, I got an opportunity to represent one of their models, Lady Gaga, to work in Sheffield as an in-store model, to boost and create awareness about her brand; her perfume known as Fame. It was an amazing three-day modeling platform, because the people there were very nice and welcoming. They came into the store everyday to the extent that we ran out of stock of the product. So it was really amazing modeling for Lady Gaga.

Other brands you represent...
I also worked as a brand ambassador for The Links body spray, as well as a brand ambassador for some Unilever products, such as Dove and some of their other products. I was also a rigger for Toni and Guy at Boots Store, Wolverhampton, where we put in place the necessary rigging equipment in store to facilitate the demonstration of their hairstyling products.

UKTop Model experience…
The experience was awesome. We were chosen after some auditions and thereafter, we went for the opening ceremony in Soho, London, where we showcased ourselves and met with other models.  The event was held on April 20, 2013 at the Hilton London Metropole Hotel. It was the grand finale; the men’s category of the competition and we had the opportunity to meet with different designers from different countries and it was really a good time for me.

Emerging as a winner...
I never thought I would be part of the winners. The winner was from Italy, while the second runner up was from Britain. I was the only Nigerian in the category and I remember that while at the back stage, as everyone was admiring the Italian’s effort for winning, my number was called as the first runner-up and I didn’t even realise that was me until it was called for about three times. So it came as shock, but I felt elated.

Platforms it exposed you to...
There were so many benefits that were supposed to come out of it, had it been I stayed back in the UK, but I couldn’t. If I had, I would have been able to use the platform to pursue other things, but I wasn’t chanced to stay longer.

Education background…
I attended Doland International School and Rose International School, both in Akute, Ogun State, for my primary school education. Then I proceeded to the Lagos State Model College, Badore, for my secondary school education and then to the University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, where I studied Crop Protection. Then I went ahead to Coventry University, London, for a Master in International Business.
How Nigerian modeling industry can be improved...
Unlike the UK, where there are lot of companies and modeling agencies online for you to work with, the reverse is the case here in Nigeria. Back in the UK, you can get contracts to work for some brands once your profile is put out there and I think that is a very good way to encourage and promote aspiring models. Also the Nigerian industry focuses more on female models, which I feel if such attention was also paid on the male counterparts, would go a long way in helping. Even Nigerian designers work more on female clothings than the males, with 80 per cent of the industry focusing on the females and 20 per cent on the males. So if this can be addressed, then it would get better.

Definition of style…
Style is your personality. If your personality is not into your line of style, then people would know that you are only trying to create what is not within you. But if you bring in your own personal style, probably in the way you talk, walk or dress, then that would define you. So basically, style, to me, is the way you do your things. Then style has to do with your personal grooming; the way you look and compose yourself. Personally, a driving force for me is ‘never forget yourself when you are out there. Present yourself in a way that gets you noticed.’ So I would say the definition of style is to stay well, stay fit, stay nice.

What makes a good outfit...
Well, my response to that is quite funny. My favourite guy in every movie I’ve seen is Harvey Specter in the series, Suits. The role was played by Gabriel S. Macht and I really loved his personal grooming. He was always looking so good and his carriage and everything about him was a perfect blend. He dressed as if the outfits were personally made for him. So to answer your question, every outfit he wore in that movie was a good one.

Besides modeling, what else do you do?
I’m a businessman and that is basically what I’m doing now.

Favourite accessory?
That would be my perfume. The truth is UK changed a lot about me. If someone had told me before I travelled that I would spend as much as N5, 000 on a perfume, I probably wouldn’t have believed it. But my mentality changed over there. So the perfume I use is Amouage Memoir, which goes for about 200 pounds.

Between '12 Years a Slave' and Anne Frank: Steve McQueen sits down with Haaretz

Between '12 Years a Slave' and Anne Frank: Steve McQueen sits down with Haaretz

Director of the Oscar favorite explains how it set about 'to tell a story that had never before been told cinematically.

Chiwetel Ejiofor in a scene from "12 Years A Slave"

NEW YORK − Between 1501 and 1866, about 11 million Africans were sold into slavery or born as slaves. “There were 101 slave narratives published between 1760 and 1865 ... But of that 101, the only one describing the experiences of a free Negro who was kidnapped and then escaped was Solomon Northup,” the historian Henry Louis Gates, Jr. told Time magazine in October.
“12 Years a Slave,” the latest movie by British director Steve McQueen ‏(“Hunger,” 2008; “Shame,” 2011‏), based on Northup’s book, just won the Golden Globe for Best Drama and has been nominated for nine Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress and Best Screenplay Adaptation. It is now playing in Israel. When I met McQueen, along with a small number of other journalists, a few weeks ago in New York, he was articulate and eager to discuss his most ambitious project to date. He spoke rapidly in reply to questions, as if there would not be enough time to fully explore the cultural and historical context of slavery and its aftermath.
“My mother was born in Grenada, in the place where the mother of Malcolm X was born,” McQueen related. “I have relatives from Trinidad, where many of the Black Power movement activists were born. That is part of my tradition, and that’s why I’d wanted to make a film about slavery for many years.”
He began by reading history books and slave memoirs, “but it was only after I’d already started to write the draft of a fictional screenplay that my wife ran across Northup’s book. From the instant I started to read it, it was clear to me that this was going to be my script. I was very surprised to discover that no one I knew had ever heard of the book, which tells such an amazing story and is so rich in details and nuances. I was filled with a tremendous desire to put this book on the screen. I thought it was a story that had to be told, precisely because so few people had been exposed to it before.”
McQueen noted that he was living in Amsterdam at the time. “I used to go by Anne Frank’s house almost every day,” he recalled. “Reading Northup’s book, I could not ignore the similarity. I felt that it was like Anne Frank, but a hundred years earlier. Like Anne Frank’s diary, ‘12 Years a Slave’ is about a person who tries to preserve humanity in a dark period characterized by a lack of humanity and by discrimination. In addition, Northup’s book is actually the only written testimony we have about someone who was sold into slavery and succeeded in being freed and even suing those who abducted and abused him.”
The film is disturbing and difficult to watch, not least because it evokes many Holocaust films. It contains long scenes in which McQueen documents in immense detail the emotional collapse of a young mother who is sold into slavery and whose two small children are taken from her, and the rape of a young black woman named Patsey ‏(an impressive debut performance by Lupita Nyong’o‏, who was nominated for a Best Supporting Actress Oscar) by a sadistic white plantation owner ‏(Michael Fassbender, who played the lead role in both of McQueen’s previous features‏ and was nominated for a Best Supporting Actor Oscar).
The autobiography by Northup, who had been a free man and a musician, was published in 1853. The book was little known outside the academic community engaged in the study of slavery. Northup describes how in April 1841 he was lured into going from New York to Washington to appear with two white men who styled themselves “circus artists.” The next day he woke up in an abandoned cellar on Pennsylvania Avenue, shackled to the wall with iron chains.
The “circus artists” turned out to be slave traders who abducted blacks from northern states and sold them in the South. For Northup, this was the beginning of a 12-year ordeal on plantations in Louisiana. Despite the impossible conditions, Northup was able, in an unprecedented feat at the time, to reacquire the papers attesting to the fact that he was a “free man” and be reunited with his wife and children.
The film opens when Northup ‏(Chiwetel Ejiofor, who has been nominated for a Best Actor Oscar for the role‏) is living with his family in Saratoga Springs, New York. After being abducted into slavery, he is forced to pretend that he is an escaped slave from Georgia; every attempt to identify himself by his real name ends with flogging, blows and threats. After he is smuggled to New Orleans in a boat and sold to a plantation owner, he is moved around between plantations, and his physical and mental health steadily deteriorates. Finally, he finds himself on the plantation of Edwin Epps ‏(Fassbender‏), who has a reputation of being able “to break every slave.”
Asked whether he was influenced by the cinematic canon that deals with the Second World War and the annihilation of Europe’s Jews, McQueen offered a surprising answer: “No, and for a simple reason: movies never influence me. To watch movies and make movies are two completely different things − it’s like watching football and being a football player. In that sense, if you’re ‘looking for inspiration’ from other directors it will just interfere with developing a style of your own. In this case I worked with the book, which provided stunning material, and I didn’t look for outside influences.”
Still, some critics have compared the film to Steven Spielberg’s “Schindler’s List.”
“That’s a flattering comparison, because I admire Spielberg as a director, but I don’t think it’s accurate. I wanted to tell a story that had never before been told cinematically. When I read Northup’s book, I asked myself, ‘How can it be that this book isn’t on the syllabus of every educational institution in America?’ And I wanted to change that.”
The book contains many harsh descriptions of violence and abuse. How did you decide what to show on the screen and what to leave out?
“The book is definitely not easy to read. Before starting on the project I made a decision: I am going to make a film about slavery. And when you make a film about slavery, you can’t avoid torture and abuse, because they are the foundations on which that racist system stood. For example, in the scene in which Solomon undergoes an attempted lynching and is hanged from a tree with only the tips of his toes barely touching the ground, it was important for me to show the other plantation slaves in the background continuing with their work routine and not trying to help him. That scene tries to exemplify how common the abuse was. They didn’t experience lynching as something exceptional that called for intervention, but as part of the hell they lived in. At the same time, they knew that if they tried to intervene, their lives would be in danger. By the way, in the book the lynching attempt lasts a whole day. Northup was hanged by the neck from a tree and was barely able to breathe for more than 10 hours. I asked myself how I could translate this prolonged torture into a scene of some minutes within the framework of a film of a little more than two hours.”
Weren’t you afraid that the scene would shock the viewers? Some viewers walked out in the middle of the premiere screening in Toronto.
“I have no interest in shocking people. I always ask myself, ‘Where is the breaking point? Where do things become too difficult to watch?’ When I read the description of the lynching in the book, I entered into Northup’s consciousness: he was hanging there for many hours and a lot of thoughts passed through his head during that torture. I wanted the viewers to undergo a similar experience, so the length of this scene is significant. Not because it creates shock, but simply because it is faithful to the book.”
Indeed, the long scene of the lynching attempt is one of the most harrowing and most brilliant in the history of cinema’s engagement with slavery. One reason for the achievement is the hypnotic cinematography of Sean Bobbitt, who also worked with McQueen on his two previous features. Their years-long cooperation has produced a singular, uncompromising aesthetic style. It rests on a relentless disparity between dark, difficult subjects − such as self-starvation as a political tool, psychological and physical torture, sexual abuse and self-destructive tendencies − and a ravishing, precise aesthetic that makes viewers utter “Wow!” more than once while watching the film.
In reply to a question, McQueen said he finds no contradiction between the beauty, the colorfulness and the sheer aesthetic pleasure of his films, and their violent, highly charged content. “Having been an art student who came to the cinema as a visual artist, I am very leery of both kitsch and fetishization,” he explained. “Look at the works of Velasquez − he painted gorgeous images, some of which documented horrific wrongs. He has a way of drawing viewers to a painting and being swallowed up in the world he creates. If his paintings were ugly or sloppy, it would be harder for him to tell his audience, ‘Look at this!’ Art has to communicate with an audience, and beauty is one way to do that. When I block a frame, there are thousands of years of the history of art and visual culture behind my decisions. That’s the place I work from: the need to translate all that knowledge into images.”
One of the techniques McQueen avails himself of in order to avoid kitsch is the use of particularly long takes, which force the viewers to focus their gaze on the suffering character without providing an emotional climax or the rapid, hyperactive editing that characterizes Hollywood films ‏(and which have the effect of making us forget disturbing images quickly in favor of the next scene‏). For example, in one of the most significant scenes in “12 Years a Slave,” Epps forces Northup to flog Patsey as punishment for leaving the plantation without permission. The scene, which consists of one shot 10 minutes long, seems to last an eternity. The torture endured by the young woman is translated into a cinematic experience that manages to be oppressive and hypnotic at the same time.
Does cinematic representation have limits? Is there anything in the world that is not amenable to representation?
“No,” McQueen replies firmly. “There is no such thing, unless censorship or self-censorship is involved. We are sitting here and having a conversation because I made a film about slavery. That’s my proof that human experience can be presented, despite the historical distance. I think the discourse of the ‘unrepresentable,’ which claims that not everything can be mediated through visual or textual language, derives from the fact that people don’t want to confront images that are liable to compel them to acknowledge a harsh reality. For example, when the first images from Vietnam penetrated the public consciousness − like the image of the little girl protecting herself from napalm − many people hoped they would just disappear from their consciousness.
“The question of why brutal images need to be shown is a central issue of our time, as Susan Sontag notes in her book, ‘Regarding the Pain of Others.’ On the other hand, it’s not a new question. The argument about whether to show pictures of Jesus on the cross has been raging for 2,000 years. I do not purport to provide answers. I am an artist − it’s the critics and the researchers who need to answer those questions.”
Still, for years you did only video work, and won the Turner Prize for visual art. You didn’t turn to film until a relatively late stage in your career. Do you think there is a difference between those two media?
“Not really. One is poetry, the other is prose. They both speak the same language, but in different poetical ways. Video art is a more abstract medium; cinema is more focused on the narrative aspect.”
Despite the similarity between “12 Years a Slave” and his previous films, it’s hard to ignore the fact that McQueen’s new film is his most communicative work ‏(both “Hunger” and “Shame” contain little dialogue and the scenes are slow and hypnotic‏) and, to a certain extent, his first “Oscar movie.” The comparison with “Schindler’s List” is valid, though − it sometimes seems as though Spielberg would have been happy to adapt Northup’s book for the screen.
The feeling that this is McQueen’s most Hollywood-style film is due partly to the crew he worked with. The screenwriter was John Ridley ‏(who wrote the script for “Red Tails,” a movie about the Second World War produced by George Lucas‏). Ridley adapted Northup’s book for the screen and added key statements in the style of “I don’t want to survive − I want to live!” One of the busiest composers in Hollywood, Hans Zimmer, is responsible for the bombastic soundtrack ‏(which is very reminiscent of the music he wrote for Christopher Nolan’s “Dark Knight” trilogy and for Nolan’s earlier film, “Inception”‏). And the cast includes, in addition to Fassbender and Ejiofor, a number of Hollywood stars in cameo roles, including Brad Pitt ‏(who is also listed as a producer‏), Benedict Cumberbatch, Paul Dano, Paul Giamatti and Sarah Paulson.
The combination of well-known names, a fraught historical subject that has been quite popular in Hollywood in recent years, and ardent reviews have made the film and its director leading potential Oscar candidates. McQueen has been considered an experimental director whose work is geared to a small audience of cineastes who are fond of art house films. But he says, somewhat surprisingly, “I make films for an audience, and I am happy to have as broad an audience as possible see my films.”
This film will probably open a lot of doors in Hollywood for you. So far you have dealt with very depressing themes: a hunger strike, addiction, slavery. What will your next film be about?
“I think the next project will be a musical,” McQueen says, and laughs. “But only if I can persuade Fassbender to sing and dance.”

Fashion crisis! Right before Kim Kardashian was set to appear on The Ellen DeGeneres, she suffered a major wardrobe malfunction. In a panic, the 33-year-old reality star took to Instagram to share photos of possible sexy replacement outfits to wear instead.
"OMG my dress for Ellen just broke!!!" she wrote on Thursday, Jan. 16. "I have to leave in 5mins . . . I need help! Should I wear this???" Kardashian shared a photo of herself trying on an ultra low-cut white top and long curve-hugging tan skirt. The Keeping Up With the Kardashians star posted a front and side view of the look and struck a fierce pose.
Shortly after -- even with the apparent rush -- Kardashian posted a second photo of her final pick. "Ok found my look! Thank God!" she wrote. "I ran out of time . . . off to the taping #phew #thedrama #anxiety."

The fashionista settled on the same white top, but changed her skirt to a similar but shorter style. She posted a front and side view again of her outfit while posing with a very serious expression for the camera.
Kardashian had a big smile on her face, however, once she arrived on set to The Ellen DeGeneres Show. During her interview with host Ellen DeGeneres, Kardashian gushed about her fiance Kanye West and 7-month-old daughter, North, and shared an adorable new baby photo.
"She changes all the time," the new mom said of her baby girl. "One day she'll look like Kanye, one day she'll look like me. It's so crazy. And her personality is so cute. She is really calm and really quiet."

On the Scene at the Oscars nominations announcement

oscar-nominations-02

It’s Oscar nomination day, and for movie nerds, it’s like Christmas morning. Like Santa and his sleigh, we eagerly await the announcement of the year’s Oscar nominees. Who will get snubbed? Who will be surprised? Fans across the country can watch the nominations announced live either online or on some TV outlets. But what’s it like to actually be at the Academy on a morning like this? EW was on the scene (before the sun) to be there for the 5:38 a.m. PT air time. The room is full of press and publicists there to support their clients or films, hoping to hear their names called.
The Academy and producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron announced that this year’s Oscar telecast would have a movie hero theme, so the lobby of the Samuel Goldwyn Theatre in Beverly Hills was filled with images and video clips of some heroic characters from past Oscar films. Everyone from Shrek to Superman to Thelma and Louise were represented. Publicists can be overheard pre-congratulating each other on such a great year for film. “Just hoping the best for everybody. There are just so many films, so many actors,” one was overheard saying. Soon, the friendly smiles turned to focused concentration once the theater opened. As you can expect, there’s a lot of security for an event like this, to make sure the nominees stay secret and in the right person’s hands. Once inside the theater, Academy President Cheryl Boone Isaacs coyly announced that we had our own superhero among us to help announce the nominees: Thor himself, Chris Hemsworth. Here is what went down during the 12 categories they announced live:

Best Supporting Actor
Barkhad Abdi, the breakout star of Captain Phillips, received a warm reception when he was the first name called for the morning. One publicist was heard whispering “wow” after his name. An Oscar nomination is a pretty impressive thing for a film debut. However, there was an even bigger reaction for Jonah Hill, who was definitely a surprise in the category for Wolf of Wall Street. Jared Leto, who just won a Golden Globe for Dallas Buyers Club, received an applause after his name was announced.
Supporting Actress
Blue Jasmine actress Sally Hawkins, the first name in the category, received the warmest response, probably because she was the least expected nominee in the category. I’m still trying to process not hearing Oprah’s name this morning.
Original Song
Some really big responses in this category. One person screamed with enthusiasm when the song “Alone Yet Note Alone” was nominated from the film of the same name. Also “Happy” from Despicable Me 2 by Pharrell Williams and “Ordinary Love” from Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom by U2 received very warm responses. I’m happy to see a full category here again and the potential for great performances, but the real question remains: Will Idina Menzel or Demi Lovato sing Frozen‘s hit “Let It Go” now that is was also officially nominated?
Adapted Screenplay
Also a lot of reaction for this category, specifically for Before MidnightPhilomena, and The Wolf of Wall Street. The latter reaction was the beginning of a strong showing of support for Scorsese’s controversial film.
Original Screenplay
Huge cheers from one section for the Dallas Buyers Club nomination.
Animated Feature
A respectful acknowledgement for The Wind Rises, Hayao Miyazaki’s last film, took over part of the crowd and some surprised reactions for Despicable Me 2 getting nominated, perhaps over Disney’s Monsters University. Disney still has a good shot to take the prize home with Frozen, though, and The Wind Rises was produced by Disney as well.
Documentary Feature
Really big response for 20 Feet From Stardom, which was the last film announced. Many people were immediately surprised by the snub of the anti-Sea World doc Blackfish.
Director
The biggest response was for Alexander Payne and Martin Scorsese, even though Alfonso Cuaron got some applause. It seemed Payne and Scorsese were more of a surprise to everyone.
Best Actress
Biggest shock was Emma Thompson was missing, and it wasn’t realized right away. A couple of publicists were heard laughing, almost in fear of the strong category, one saying, “Oy, tough one,” after Meryl Streep’s name was announced.
Best Actor
Again, what a morning! A quiet hush took over the room before this one, because everyone knew this was THE one that, no matter what, people would be upset. It seemed almost instantly people knew things were going to be crazy when Christian Bale was the first name announced, alphabetically of course. Leo received a little bit of applause, but the clear favorite in the room for the category was the last name called, Matthew McConaughey. Lots of Dallas Buyers Club support overall.
Best Picture
The holy grail. Now that there can be anywhere from five to 10 nominees, you never know when they are going to stop with this one, so you really have to be paying attention. Big cheers were especially given for Dallas Buyers ClubHerPhilomena, and, again, The Wolf of Wall Street.

Beyonce And Solange Celebrated Tina Knowles’ 60th Birthday With A Flaw-Free Masquerade Ball

Happy 60th birthday, Tina Knowles! Was our invitation to your totally bomb party lost in the mail?!

When they’re not busy slaying the music game dead, sisters Beyoncé andSolange apparently double as party planners! (What, didn’t you see that private zoo blowout mama Bey threw for Blue Ivy’s 2nd birthday?)
This time, family matriarch Tina Knowles got the royal b’day treatment. And, based on the photos Bey just shared on her Tumblr, it was QUITE the masquerade-themed New Orleans bash the Knowles sibs threw for their mama last Saturday. Before we get into the party deets, can we just wish Ms. Tina Knowles  a happy belated 60th? (Her actual birthday was on Jan. 4, FYI.) Not only did the woman give birth to Beyoncé, give birth to Solange, and design some of Destiny’s Child’s most ICONIC matching outfits, but Tina manages to look more stunning in a ballgown than most people half her age could ever dream. EVERYBODY #BOWDOWN.
Anyway, some highlights from the event: Mama Tina arrived in — brace for it — a horse-drawn carriage. Like Cinderella! And, word on the street is that a video montage coordinated by family and friends played on a big screen. #Emotional #JustLikeABatMitzvah
Beyonce and Solange knowles threw their mama Tina an amazing 60th birthday party in New Orleans! Check out some photos from the bash
This photo of Bey dancing with her nephew, Juelz, is like one swift kick to the ovaries.
Famous guests included Jay Z (OBVS), Kelly RowlandJennifer HudsonBig Freedia, Kris Jenner, and Kendall Jenner, who were all decked out in full masquerade regalia!

Legit, this whole shindig sounds like the picture-perfect birthday party, thrown by picture-perfect daughters. The only thing that mayyyyybe could’ve made the party better would be if proud Grandma Tina had gotten to party the night away with little Blue Ivy.
Then again, Blue was probably off somewhere getting her beauty sleep, safely nestled in a cashmere blanket in a diamond-encrusted crib. But, that sounds like a bomb night as well!

Justin Bieber will star in ‘Expendables 4’

The Biebs is taking his bad boy behavior to the big screen! Justin is set to star alongside the great Sylvester Stallone in the upcoming movie ‘The Expendables 4’, according to a new report. ‘That is for real,’ ‘Expendables’ actor Terry Crews promises.

Justin Bieber is coming soon to a theater near you! The Biebs has reportedly landed a role alongside Sylvester Stallone in the latest installment of The Expendables, which will most likely be released by the summer of 2016. Do you think Justin will be a good addition to the film?

One of the stars of the action-packed franchise unexpectedly let the exciting news about Justin, 19, slip to a reporter during the Audi Golden Globes Celebration in Hollywood, Calif. on Jan. 12.

“The next one, I am telling you, Justin Bieber is coming for ‘The Expendables 4,’” actor Terry Crews told Confidenti@l.

“That is for real, Bieber in ‘Expendables 4,’” Terry added. ”We are going to shoot him all at the same time. It will be wonderful.” The Expendables 4 is expected to film scenes in Bulgaria and will most likely be released by the summer of 2016.

Hopefully Justin will be able to clean up his act by the time filming begins!

As HollywoodLife.com previously reported, Justin could be charged with a felony after he allegedly egged his neighbor’s home on Jan. 9.

Officials at the L.A. County Sheriff’s Department believe they’ve got Justin this time. They’re certain that security video evidence of the egging in action, along with proof that it caused extensive damage, will be enough to pin him — and possibly even put him behind bars.

Beyonce’s fans

(ThyBlackMan.com) If you haven’t heard, (unless you’ve lived under a rock,) Beyonce shocked the music world by releasing her self-titled fifth album Beyoncé  via iTunes in December. As expected, her fans not only bought the album, but showered their grace upon their female messiah. And if you’re wondering, there are men out here who worships the ground she walks on. Yes, it’s that serious, folks. If her following was just a large group, now it’s a full-blown cult. With that said, it brings great shame that Beyoncé is under fire for having a photo on Instagram where it looks like she is replacing Jesus Christ on The Last Supper.
Why great shame? Because we acted like a day like this wouldn’t come. The media acted oblivious to this, too.  And of course, they now are sayingbeyonce-and-fansBeyoncé has taken it too far, even though they are mainly responsible for the gravy train. But if thrusting their anger and shock at Bey is their way to go, someone please point them to the nearest Beytree and show them where her Beyhives live.
Beyonce and her fan base is perhaps the equivalent to the perception of Ohio State fans (how do I know? Because I am an Ohio State fan.)  Loud, obnoxious, can’t tell us nothing, and extremely loyal. Sadly, saying anything bad about Beyonce is considered “blasphemous” as plenty have defended her on my Facebook. While the outrage given by the media is justifiable, they can’t act like they didn’t partially play a pivotal role in this. It’s impossible to overlook that if a celebrity gets enough false propaganda they, too, will believe they are past the wheeling’s and dealings of being human.
Once the celebrity believes it, it’s pretty much a done deal.  See: Kanye West, R. Kelly, the great Michael Jackson and any other major superstar. If I was with Beyoncé, I’d at least tell her (or whoever is handling her social media accounts) that maybe that post is a bad idea. But like most celebrity’s with entourages, usually it’s a “my way or the highway” type thing. Not saying it is, but her post may point in that direction. Of course, her fans bit the bullet and increased their worship of the singer. Of course, they are also were making excuses that people are going over their heads.
But let’s be real; the principle reason she can get away with a lot of things such as this Instagram post is because of the way her fans treat her as a God. Let a friend from high school or their neighbor down the street have people calling them a god or take a picture in front of the last supper and let’s see how many upsetting social media posts we will view. Let’s see how many times people would negatively scathe or demean that person cause of people calling them a god.
Yet, Beyonce, one of the entertainment world’s most politically-correct, carefully marketed stars in history is frequently called Bey-sus, King Bey, and is given a pass. It’s cool to think highly of someone, even an entertainer. But when the entertainer begins to smell themselves and do technically politically incorrect things with excuses from the fans, then you know it’s a problem with many roots.
So, no. I don’t blame Beyonce; even though I’m no fan of her at all (I like some of her music, though.) I think the perception of Beyonce is based mainly on propaganda; to be flawless, and her latest Instagram post exemplifies that. Is it her fault? No, but is it the fans fault for securely buying into an image, while forgetting the basis of common sense? Damn right. Contrary to popular belief, Beyonce is a human like us, too.

Police investigate Kanye West for possible battery

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. -- Beverly Hills police say they're investigating Kanye West for misdemeanor battery after a man accused the rapper of attacking him.

Sgt. George DeMarois says several witnesses identified West as being involved in an altercation around 12:15 p.m. on Monday at an office on exclusive Wilshire Boulevard. The rapper had left the premises by the time officers arrived.

Police said Tuesday they weren't releasing further details and Blair Berk, an attorney representing West in another case, declined comment.

West was charged last year with misdemeanor battery and attempted grand theft after a fight with a photographer at Los Angeles International Airport. He's pleaded not guilty in the case.

The photographer has sued West for assault and battery. West's attorneys stated that West was in fear for his safety.

Antmoluchiuganda

The maiden edition of Oluchi Orlandi’s Africa’s Next Top Model competition came to an end yesterday.

“Africa but first, my beautiful country Uganda who have put all their trust in me; encouraged and supported me from day 1; thank you.

“Beautiful Africa and even more beautiful people from around the world that have all shown me nothing but love.

“I am extremely humbled and overwhelmed by the tremendous and mind blowing support you beauties have shown me over the past 10 weeks.”
